The challenge

Hillaldam’s CNC machinery cannot tolerate power interruptions. Even a brief outage risks equipment damage and costly downtime. Rising Eskom costs on the Miniflex tariff were a growing burden, with annual grid spend of around R770,000 before solar.
The CNC section has high inrush currents – load data showed a 64 kW spike lasting one second – and the factory runs six days a week from early morning. Expansion of the CNC section was already planned, so the solution had to be future-proof from day one.

Working closely with the client, our team designed a solution that balanced engineering excellence, financial viability, and long-term operational performance.
Nesa Power specified the Sigenergy SigenStor platform for its zero-millisecond changeover, which is critical for CNC protection. Only the CNC section was treated as an essential load, so the battery could be right-sized instead of protecting the whole site.
The BESS is sized for about two hours of CNC outages per day, reducing generator dependency. An over-panelling ratio of 1.6 (above the typical 1.4) maximises yield through the inverters. The Sigen commercial gateway architecture allows extra inverter blocks and battery stacks later with minimal install cost.
